If the stone is somewhat large then the doctor will use a tube with a mesh called stent to keep the ureter open. This will help in passing the stones without blocking the ureter. This treatment requires just an hour and you can return home on the same day. This treatment is suitable when the stone size is anywhere between 4 mm to 2.5 cm. Although it does not cause any pain, pregnant women, persons suffering from kidney infections, bleeding disorders etc are not advised to go for this treatment. It is not safe for those with pacemakers as well.
Percutaneous nephrolithotomy:
This method involves the treatment of inserting a small telescope into the kidney through a cut in the patient’s back. Then the surgeon will remove the small stones. If the stone is large, then he will break it down into pieces and then remove it. This method is used when the stone is large and could not be removed by extracorporeal shock wave treatment.
Ureteroscopy
In this method, the surgeon will insert a thin telescope called ureteroscope into the urethra. But he will not make any incision in the body for inserting the telescope. This will help him to identify the location of the kidney stone. Then he will use small forceps to remove the kidney stones. It is easy to remove smaller stones. However, for larger stones, the surgeon will have to break down to pieces first.
